Mentally Advanced Series ending, Greg finishing MLP fandom projects

"NAS will be the last thing I do in the fandom, and I hope it will be a fun extended farewell"

Greg, aka DawnSomewhere, aka the main man behind the Mentally Advanced Series is throwing in the towel, as he explains in a recently-released half-hour long video.

In it, we get the impression that he's pretty burned out on the show, and MAS will not likely continue into the future.

And so another chapter of the MLP fandom comes to a close.

Last one out, turn out the lights?

    2. I really enjoyed it back when it was using actual footage (and later screenshots) from the show. I know he had to stop doing that due to copyright issues, but I wish he would've continued with that style, instead of investing a huge amount of time learning first flash and then Toonboom harmony, but since that allowed him to stray from the episode more (basically going from an abridged series to a full on parody) that's when I began to enjoy the episodes less. IMO they weren't shit, but they definitely weren't as good as the old stuff (writing-wise. Greg's animation skills got pretty great over the course of the negative series).

I think the constraint of having to more or less follow the episode's plot made for better writing. (Which is often the case in any area of creativity: working within constraints often leads to more creative thinking how to work around them)

  3. for a period of time he was pretty much "I QUIT MY JOB, THAT MEANS I NEED YOUR MONEY, GIMME GIMME GIMME"

The quality dropped off in terms of the humor, sure he has bettered himself in terms of animations, still doesn't change his highly predictable presentation in his work.

"oh this has rarity in it, i wonder how long before he makes a joke at her sexual promiscuity"

he should have stayed at the pharmacy.

  4. Sure HN, the ride will never end. Meanwhile bronies (been a long time since you've called yourself that I bet) are taking gut punches at least every month with shit like this. cons drying up, past hors famous people hiding their pony, classics fading into oblivion

Acute nostalgia, art, and news likes this are what's keeping us entertained at this point

  5. It was long past time for Greg to put MAS to rest. MAS is a parody of season 1 that's been going on for six years. And Greg's biggest complaint is that his parody isn't relevant anymore because the characters evolved beyond what he expected. Because it's pretty hard to make fun of Rainbow Dash being incompetent when she's not anymore. Or Rarity for never amounting to anything when she has. Or Twilight for being a shut in when she's the ambassador of friendship.

I loved you, MAS, but good riddance.

  6. Greg has become so incredibly cynical in recent years that I haven't been enjoying MAS very much anyways, and I'm not really looking forward to NAS. (Yes I know cynicism was always a major part of MAS. But I can only handle so much negativity. I know a guy like Greg IRL, always analyzing movies/tv/etc and being incredibly pessimistic and cynical, trying to tell you that you're wrong if you enjoy(ed) something he didn't.)

Anyways Greg is no longer motivated to make this stuff out of his enjoyment of the show, instead he's making it seemingly out of ever increasing hatred of the show and the direction it's gone (and worse, when he seems to take shots at those who still do enjoy the show).

FiM has changed a lot. It's not as good as it used to be. The writing's a mess now more than ever. That said some people still really do like the show, and I think it's because they're (myself included i guess) still just see the show as an escape, a fun 22 minutes with characters we like. Would I have preferred that the show actually have real character development and ongoing stories and the like? Of course, but despite Lauren's best efforts in S1&S2 it just wasn't meant to be, and I think many people including Greg are disproportionately furious about this. Maybe it's because they feel they invested so much time into fan works when then show was still """good""" and now it's a "what have i done with the past 5 years of my life" type of thing... I dunno. Maybe I'm way off the mark.

No matter what, somehow I'm still able to find some enjoyment in this show, and if Greg hates it as much as he seems to, then he really should have stopped a long time ago. He doesn't owe it to anyone to continue (except his Patreon supporters I suppose...)

  9. I think the weakest part of this video is Greg's response to why he won't just turn MAS into a completely original series. He says it's because it needs to be parody to not be copyright infringement. And he says "other pony animators" get away with it but he still likes to be mostly within the law. This is obviously completely dodging the question. Is he forgetting about Rainbow Dash Presents? His *own* series that uses copyrighted characters in completely original stories? Obviously it's based on fanfics, but those are *technically* themselves derivative/copyright-infringing works.

That particular point felt pretty disingenuous.
