The real-life horse world bids goodbye to another of its most talented members. Cigar, a racehorse known for winning 16 consecutive races, has passed away. I was able to get information, living near KY, on behalf of Horse News. Full story below the break.

Cigar was bred in 1990 in Bel Air, Maryland, the foal of North American Leading Sire Palace Music and Minstrel and was originally owned by billionaire wife Madeline Pickens before she traded the horse with her ex-husband Allen. Cigar was shortly thereafter given residency at the Kentucky Horse Park and trained by Kentucky Derby Hall-of-Famer Bill Mott.

Cigar, like many bronies, enjoyed rolling in the dirt.

Cigar earned almost $100,000 in his first year racing. Cigar earned a lifetime almost $10 million dollars in wins, making him the top earning American thoroughbred of all time. In 1995, Cigar won the Breeder's Cup Championships, which you can watch in all its 90's glory below:

Cigar was named Racehorse of the Decade for the 1990's. He was bred with 34 mares, none of whom sired any horses.

After retirement, Cigar was showered with accolades and honors, including a bronze statue unveiled in Florida in 1997.

"Every good horse I've ever been around knows they're a good horse and knows they're special," Wes Chanter told Horse News in a released statement from the Kentucky Horse Park, "and Cigar certainly had that. He will certainly be missed here."

A press release from Cigar's owners states that a public memorial will be held in Kentucky in the following weeks.

  15. Horses are large and powerful creatures, and one thrust of the horse's muscular body, or one slip up on your part could lead you to a nasty accident.  highbeechridingschool
