Final Draft credited as Associate Producer, gets history wrong

Yesterday a new poster for "A Brony Tale" surfaced, confirming something that many had heard for quite some time (and never bothered to follow-up on); that Final Draft is actually an Associate Producer of the film. The name Mike Bernstein appears in the credit footer of the poster, opening a whole new series of questions about the contents of the documentary. We have received reports from several who have seen the film that Draft himself makes an appearance, and also a critical mistake.

The origins of the fandom and key moments in its history, would be considered an integral part of any documentary, especially one of this scale and scope of production. That being said, the origin of the word "brony" would be pretty important to a film called "A Brony Tale". Horse-News has heard from several who have attended premiers of the film, that Draft attributes the creation of word "brony" and the fandom at large, to 4chan's "Random" board, /b/.

Names omitted to protect the innocent.

While it is a correct assertion that the fandom came from 4chan as a whole (despite the modern community's best efforts to bury that fact) it is a major error to say that it started on /b/. Any community member that was actually around at the dawn of the show would be able to tell you, that the fandom actually started on the /co/ board, with threads leading up to the premier, as well as the famed October 10th "The Zam" thread which truly kicked off the community. /b/ did not begin involvement for many weeks. The word "brony" was also invented on the /co/ board, being a combination of the words "bro" and "pony".

Provided above, is the origin of the word "brony", being posted 13 days after the airing of the first episode, on the /co/ board. The /co/ board is where Lauren Faust first visited the fandom publicly in the early days of the show.

Some may believe that this detail isn't that big of a deal. But if you're going to go on the record, talking about 4chan's history, you probably shouldn't take the word of somebody who doesn't even LIKE the website, such as Draft, who has a long history of feuding with the board. Especially when the whole point of the film is to provide accurate representations of the community and the fandom, saying that it spawned from /b/, the most NSFW board on the website, as opposed to /co/ which is much tamer, could give an entirely different impression of our roots.

So why would an Associate Producer mess that up?
Well I suppose you should ask first what an associate producer DOES.

According to IMDB, a producer is tasked with...handling the money matters. "Raising funding, hiring key personnel, and arranging for distributors". Right in the fine print, Drafty may have had some pocketbook control over the film. Is it really just "EFN: The Movie"? Maybe. But it will depend what actual tasks he was given by the producer.

We will see when the film is released where we all can see it, andwhat other mistakes or errors were made.

  1. Only in the hiatus can something this meaningless be considered drama

    2. To be fair, second anon, it is kinda stupid that this article was tagged "drama".

    3. To be fair, third anon, anything that involves Draft is drama.

  2. I've seen the film. Draft is listed onscreen as a producer, and he does stop while being interviewed to make a specific point that "brony" comes from "/b/" and "pony", not "bro" and "pony". <_<

The film itself isn't that bad, being a collection of stories from people in various areas of the fandom, and how the show affected them. There are parts in it that I can definitely recognise in myself and agree with, but it doesn't feel particularly cohesive. There's also one section, several minutes long, that is basically an advert for Hey Ocean.

  6. For fuck's sake. Why is this guy still allowed near any big projects? I know he's not the biggest pariah in the fandom, but people should know better than this by now.

  7. It's been stated in several interviews, the official website and facebook, and the BronyCon panel that this this film was entirely self funded through Brent's Hodgee Films. I doubt Mike was involved with the film's funding at all. Now what Draft did do, and this has been confirmed through interviews and the BronyCon panel, was give Brent contacts of bronies he knew, which I don't see as a big deal.

Can the hate on this guy stop? It's kind of getting old.

      No.
      No it cannot.
Not until he apologizes for all the rotten shit he has done to this fandom.
He rubbed the wrong people poorly, people who do not forget past sins lightly.
He rejected people from joining his "media network" because they visit 4chan.
He berated Lauren Faust for making her own choices.
He refused to come meet people from the board who wanted to address their grievances in person, instead sending convention security after them.
He has tried to kill conventions just because he thinks there are "too many of them", only to turn around and chair his own.
He has backstabbed countless members of his own staff repeatedly, using them as a means to an end.
He has tried to be the gatekeeper between the showstaff and the fandom, restricting who can talk to who.
He was one of the main reasons that LPU failed, as he encouraged Sandi Haas, who wanted a smaller more manageable convention, to book more and more people.
He has gone on numerous tirades, harassing people at conventions.
His dirty underhandedness, his shitty personality, his treacherous nature of only looking out for himself, this is not a man that 4chan will forgive or forget any time soon.
So no, the hate will NOT stop.

    2. Not defending him if all this is true, but is it confirmed that he harassed those VAs at BabsCon? Video proof maybe? I never heard any of the VAs speak about it.

This is actually the first time I heard about this. Can I hear more?

    4. The BabsCon harassment rumor comes from the VA in question, told to the handlers (I know and work with several of them) and the other VAs. They all know, but will never talk about it in public. The VA in question was pretty shaken up about it and Drafty has lost mucho e-peen with the Vancouverians.

    5. I remember the rumor that the VA was Ashleigh Ball... so why, a few days later, was Ashleigh standing next to Draft on stage at the Brony Tale premiere all smiles?

    6. The only guess I have is that she's conducting herself professionally in public, knowing tge fandom will rip the flesh clean off her ribs if she says or acts otherwise.
Last thing she needs is the hipster Hey Ocean fans to think she gives a flying fuck about #BronyDrama.

    7. I honestly doubt Ashleigh cares about brony drama. Heck, most bronies don't care about brony drama. I don't like taking people's word for things like this, because then I'm judging a guy I know very little about. The show staff seem to get along with him just fine.

    8. The incident happened in a conversation between Draft and the VA, where Draft wanted an interview and then threatened to pull his support for the VAs projects if an interview didnt happen. It is mentioned in lesser details in the official statement from the con about what happened at BABS.

Also, you should all keep in mind that all the VAs have trained game-faces when ever they are in the wild with the fans. Lots of fake smiles etc. They are actors and actresses with PR training after all. Brony drama would reflect badly on them, so they probably want to stay the fuck away from any passive aggressive shit-flinging from Dr Draft.

  8. Yep, people still seems to forgot.
October 2010: /co/ gets on pone.
November 2010: /co/ organise themselves and the archive system and website is made, this is where a shittons of the meme will start, including derpy, her being a mailmare, her linking muffin, and names like Vinyl/Dj Pon3 (I still remember a guy suggestion that based on Deadmau5) and later Octavia.
January 2011: EqD is made, though its mostly used as an alternate dump like the old archive.
Mid February 2011: The flood on /b/ start, while a thread was occasional before it becomes organised, methodical and spreads out of control, it then spread on other websites like KYM. A week later the original Banning spree happens, and brony spread everywhere from that.

There's still four month of pure /co/ (where among things Faust visited and consisted 3/4 of the fans back then, the rest being in places like SA and Allspark) before /b/ really dipped into it, and everything /b/ was using was stolen from /co/ anyway.

Here's a card associating /co/ and Brony before /b/ even knew that you could troll with it.

    Get. It. Right. Bernstein.

    2. Remember the /mlp/anel, where everyone was allowed a chance for discussion on any topic regarding the fandom? Remember that one guy that tried to start a legitimate discuss point and was quickly shunned away/ swarmed with 'shitposting'?
Although such a documentary would be unhinged chaos and ramblings, i would still watch it. Yet i cant help but feel it would just end up being a less random form of pony thread simulators
