Interview with Pencil - Artist of Marble-Pie comic

Marble Pie

Every now and then, a diamond emerges from the bleak, black abyss of /mlp/, coughed forth into the light of day. One of those diamonds has emerged in the form of a fully-illustrated Anon In Equestria story. There are some NSFW elements, and they are contained in a separate account. We will link BOTH accounts here, because this is HN dammit.

We contacted Pencil, the artist for that story - dubbed "Marble-Pie" on tumblr - for a brief chat.
Here's those words.

Question 1: How long you been a nor/mlp/erson?

marble-pie

From the start when /mlp/ was made on 4chan I was there out of morbid curiosity. Prior to that i had been hanging out on /co/ and /a/, redlining some stuff for people in /ic/.  I can't even quote any number of years since I didn't mark it down to calendar or anything.
I am also awful with dates and names.

horsenews
Right On
So, what is your favorite piece of /mlp/, or /mlp/ history?

marble-pie
Well, Lauren Faust's little visit was fun. What followed it was not so much so. Other than that I hardly pay attention to events or happenings of any scale, just lurking my drawfag threads contently.

Oh and lately i had fun in Nobby's necroquest. He really needs to give that shit a bigger portion of focus instead of exploding my tumblr dashboard with million links.

marble-pie
Actually, Nobby is partially the inspiration to my comic, what got me started on it was urge to kill time between nobby's necro quests.

marble-pie
And besides ponies I am into all kinds of shit, Fallout 4, subnautica, and the long dark in gaming, though I haven't had much time for any of that with my game graphics course and the comic. Then I like to read physics and biology literacy, my most recent acquisition was Sebastian Seung's Connectome, about brain's neural structures.

horsenews
You're in a Game Graphics course huh? So It's safe to assume you're still in college?

What's your major / career goal?

marble-pie
Not college, this is just a program for adults who already have basic graphics degree.

I am expanding my skillset, who knows why, Maybe it'll do me some good some day.
I graduated as an illustrator some years back.

horsenews
Ahhh, very cool
so then how old ARE you / what DO you do for a living (besides demonic possession)?

marble-pie
I'm 32 years old, and for my living I currently do nothing, I did sales because in this country you don't get in to any creative field without connections or good lips for dick sucking.

horsenews
So that answers the follow-up question of "just how good are you at sucking dicks".

Now It wouldn't be an HN interview without asking what your favorite drink is?

marble-pie
I am partial to single malt scotch, the older the better.

horsenews
We recommend trying Glenmorangie 18 if you get the chance.

Who's your favorite artist?

marble-pie
There are so many talented people out there that I haven't had the gall to declare one as my favorite. But if I must play favorites it might as well be Shannon Chan-Kent for hitting notes so high that even bats can't hear them.

horsenews
That's pretty damn high. How high are you right now?

marble-pie
Sadly none at all. My flu made sure that I depleted all drugs from the household.

horsenews
You catch the HIV or that new ZIKA shit?

marble-pie
Those aren't even on the same map as I am so no, I have to settle for the untrendy plagues.

horsenews
What country are you in?

marble-pie
Finland.

horsenews
So, what memelord do you think will win the murrifat election?

marble-pie
Knowing Murphy's law, and how America usually function, Trump does, but only after merging with Hillary and forming some sort of hybrid worst case scenario.

horsenews
We'll place your bet on the big board. Winner gets freedommed

How many cookies can you fit in your mouth at one time?

marble-pie
4, if I get to dip them in coffee, 12.
Lubrication goes long way.

horsenews
You're hired.

marble-pie
Hurray, I'll call mom, she'll be so proud.

horsenews
How long do you think this comic will last?

marble-pie
Well, my initial estimation was 100-140 pages. so I have 100 more to go just about.
Maybe three more months.

horsenews
Any plans for after it's over?

marble-pie
Yes, let reality about Princess Flurry set in and sink into deep pit of despair, then draw my way out of it.

horsenews
That's better than any plan we have going right now.

Anything else you want people to know about you?

marble-pie
Well nothing comes to mind, the less they know, the better.
I never expected my little comic even garner all this popularity, I started a stupid niche genre comic, something so obscure that I didn't even get writefags to assist me in the beginning really.  And all of the sudden there's this swarm of people around it. I've been wondering that, then it hit me, there just isn't much content out there at the time I suppose, so people who want other things, do not have that much else to look at. I guess it is the hiatus. So what I kinda would like people to know is that this comic is not likely going to sate their specific appetites, because it is just a single story, on a single genre, and I can't really be sorry about it either.

It won't be my last comic on pony subject though, so if this one doesn't strike their fancy, maybe some another project of mine will. Who knows.

horsenews
Don't crack under the pressure.

We look forward to seeing the progress of the Marble-Pie comic and can't wait to see what you've got in-store for the future.

  5. OMIGOSH! OMIGOSH! OMIGOSH!

I am ABSOLUTELY in love with this comic and Pencil's art style! It's just so lewd and innocent at the same time so it kinda feels honest, really. I don't know if that makes sense. And just drawing page of quality art almost every day - that's a feat in itself.

Thanks for making this interview, guys. I love you too!

Oh, yeah. And Pencils, you should totally Laphroaig - shit's so good you can drink it straight out the bottle. Yeah, Glenmorangie is good, but it's kinda vanilla. It's nothing really about. Just a nice smooth whisky. A safe bet in any situation. Kinda boring. And pretty expensive. And I feel it's kinda silly spending big buck on unremarkable stuff. But I do keep a couple bottles of the stuff, because my good friend likes it.

  6. That was a short interview. Could had asked more about his drawing background and questions about the comic's story and characters; like traits, inspirations...etc.

    2. I agree, I already heard most of this from Pencils. Really dissapoint.

And no, being purposefully shitty doesn't justify incompetency.

  7. horse news has gotten real lazy lately. No reports on s6's air date, hasbro's investor conference, the totally rad guardians of harmony toys and the toy fair at ny this weekend. step it up fam.

  8. Thanks horsenews for introducing me to this tumblr by a fellow Finnfag. It's too adorable, and HIE is something of a guilty pleasure for me so it's great!

  9. In so little time, I have already created fond memories of Pencil's "Anon's Pie Adventure", and the artist himself. Been following the threads since the second day of the first one, it's just fucking great. I haven't been able to follow the recent ones, due to the sheer amount of replies Pencil's comics get. So, I just follow the comic through Tumblr, to my disadvantage-Tumblrinas can be cunts. The threads I was in can be summed as, gold with a few shit stains- there was a few problems, but they were generally "great". The greatest thing can attract the worst kind of people, from the EqD fags to redditers and that one fucking namefag. However, this didn't come without any good moments and opportunities. Hell , I can say that triggered a couple of anons by digging up my ol' stomping grounds, Equestria Daily, and posting there.

tldr: Pencil's the greatest on 4chan now and I have faggoty emotions over it.

  10. >people expecting actual journalism from Horse News

Horse News does journalism about as well as can be expected from /mlp/. Too many faggots take this shit way too seriously.

I'm glad Capper could stop wanking long enough to at least half ass this interview though. I love this comic.

  11. Marble-Pie, hope you're still keeping an eye on this and noticing my comment here. Your drawing style and writing is cooking AMAZING. You're my new favorite pony artist. No kidding. I can't wait to see the rest of this adventure. Keep up the awesome work!

The splash of colour now and then in this overall monochrome style really works, thanks to the great shading. I know what a bitch shading can be, having done a bit of drawing myself in the past. It doesn't need any colour at all, and because of that where there is colour it really pops. It's a shame it's just a little un-PG or I'd show this to everyone I know. Personally I am a big fan of the really NSFW version on the second blog so don't even think about changing the rating! :9

To HN: Love the interview to go with the links to awesome more mature hooves content, moar plz.
