/mlp/ archive shuts down

Yet another relic of "the good old days", is going away. The owner of the heinessen archive announced this evening, that due to other issues in his life, he would be shutting down the archive which has been chronicling the activities of /mlp/ since mid-2012.
His message reads as such:

"Hi, I'm the admin of http://archive.heinessen.com and some of you may have already noticed, the archive is currently down. I'm sorry to inform you that this is a permanent thing as I feel I'm incapable of running a website in my current condition. Maintaining the archive really doesn't require much from my part but in any case it's still stressful at times. Since my life is in such a disarray at the moment, I wish to get rid of any non vital sources of anxiety.
The reason I'm posting this on /mlp/ is that the archive got most of its traffic from this board.
Thanks and sorry for the inconvenience."
Nor/mlp/eople hoped that the post was nothing more than a cruel joke, as it was on April Fool's day of this year.

But all uncertainty was pushed aside when the OP placed a message on the homepage.

There is a potential, that the entirety of the archive's contents may be made available for download in the coming days, so that the public record that is not saved elsewhere will not vanish from the internet entirely, but that is in the realm of uncertainty at this time.

The archive was a critical component for many threads, serial and otherwise, and was a vital tool that connected the board's past to its present. It even functioned as an alert system for some users. The "Reports" system even kept track of the post speeds through the years, and the number of posts attributed to each namefag. Now the future of the past is unclear. How much information and history will fall through the cracks and be lost forever? It's difficult to say.

To the OP who has run the archive for these past 2 years; we thank you for your service.

Rest in peace

  2. Oh God... There was a greentext on there I was meaning to cap, but I kept putting it off since it's the goddamn archive and I can do it whenever I want... Now it's gone.

Don't let life pass you by, fellow anons. Screencap when you can. Seize the day and your dong. Sic transit gloria mundi.

  3. It's things like this that make me wish I was a neckbeard NEET with nothing better to do than watch ponyshow and post on /mlp/ all day.

  4. ... at least there's moe?

Still sucks to see heinessen go though.

  5. He could've fucking prepared for this, surely? Fair play to him for putting this stuff up there but if you're aware of the responsibilities, why not actually make torrent backups periodically, just in case?

  6. Everybody calm down, I get this. That guy published archive data, right now I'm downloading them and soonor or later I'll make copy of the archive online and everything will be just like in olden days.

    2. I found the link on Heinessen

I need to know - what about all the full images? I thought Heinessen saved them?

    3. And will you have the full images on the new archive?
If you can do it, please do. I'll help, even if it's manual.

THINK OF ALL THE STAFF TWEETS AND BOOK SCANS.

    4. Very unlikely, there are only thumbnails in that archive torrent. I might be able to put together some of them from different sources but complete collection is extremely unprobable proposition, all the more so when all images posted to /mlp/ have way over 1TB.

    5. UPDATE: OP said he would give the full images to people if they would ship him a hard drive to put them on. He doesn't have them all but he has a lot of them.

We need to get a strategy together.

Imcute is going to try and make a backup, merging with the current shit.
Not sure what moe is doing, but if they were to do they same thing we'd have another backup.

4archive has FULL images but goes back to may 5 this year, better than nothing. If we get them involved, so much the better.

  7. Was it a torrent or something? Do you have a link? Also tell him I said thanks.
The nex question is: how to make it searchable by topic, etc?
We could possibly use the foolz iamgeboard system like he used.
That being said, ould we not just make another archive site? Or a mirror? Or merge it with one of the new ones? Really the dood should leave it up for a while to let us do this.

This is going to sound like a really stupid question, but why does it cost money to host an archive? If the server's in his own living room, shouldn't he have no hosting costs? Or other ongoing costs?

The only thing I can think of is the domain name. Which can't be more than ten twenty dolalrs a month.

These are really stupid questions, and I know more than their stupidity implies, but this is the only way I can think of to ask them as I am still utterly new to web hosting, so bear with me.

  8. Suddenly im glad I saved all those old /mlp/ threads as HTML pages, with expanded images. I even have a handful of heinessen pages. Its a piddling amount compared to everything that existed, but hey, I least I have all those images.
