Comic Book Men drops the ball

As everyone is well aware by now, the nerd-based television show "Comic Book Men" did a special episode about Bronies (took them this long?), and even sent the team to BronyCon. That's all fine and good, until they totally drop the ball on one segment; the history of Derpy Hooves.

The episode kicks off with Kevin Smith laughing at the prospect that "The brony movement" has any discernible societal impact, and then cuts to the crew staring baffled at a man trying to explain bronies to them in the comic book store. From there, it's the same old song and dance that we've seen a hundred times before. "It's for kids", vacant expressions, references to homosexual prefences blah blah blah we've even grown tired of joking about it.

It's actually a bit shocking that men, who supposedly have their hands on the very pulse of geek culture are only now touching on this subject. Especially when they blend in at Bronycon so well.

If I didn't tell you that this was a guy on the show,
you'd assume it was a BC attendee.
Just before they kickoff the Costume Contest, the big bearded one decides to explain the origin of Derpy Hooves - which he gets almost backwards (saying that the name "Derpy" preceded "Ditzy") and claims that she is "special needs". So that should go over well.
Remember #SaveDerpy? One of the few Shitstorms that pulls a 3 on the Twilicorn scale? It was largely about comments like this.

He did get the part right where he says that Hasbro tried to take her away, so that helps. Maybe.

Then we see the Cosplay contest, which is cringey in a new way, because for once the actual cosplayers are not the ones that seem out of place. A man covered in a bloody smock takes the mic to talk about castration, during a parade of pony cosplayers. That happened.

Hey look it's SaberSpark and the other guy.
This display rounds out the episode, with Kevin Smith asking "did we have any winners? And I use that term loosely..." which is a nice way of calling the show's attendees of Bronycon losers. You'd think a group of men who have made their entire living off of geek culture would be more open to this sort of thing.

And like that it's over, and the proverbial "last horse limps to the barn".

Oh who are we kidding, who else will make a brony episode 2 years too late?

  1. Points for trying though. Especially the bearded guy, he seemed to put in some effort to this.

    1. Brian Johnson's the best part of that show. But it wouldn't be the same if he didn't have people to make fun of.

  2. Kevin Smith is in it? Like the Kevin Smith that once made movies like Dogma and later made movies that "aren't for critics" (because they suck, he knows it but doesn't want anybody to say it)? Well, that gives me an idea about the quality of the show.

Also, don't you think that it's a bit naive to even barely hope that a TV show that covers bronies will not go totally "ha ha, what a bunch of fucking losers"? That's as realistic as the idea of Final Draft actually being professional.

    1. They didn't even say that, though. They were pretty charitable towards the fandom, they just didn't suck anybody's dick over it.

Its okay to make fun of us, it means we have a sense of humor.

    1. That was the best, man. They should've won. I hope they try again.

      Who did win, BTW?

  4. He only really got the Ditzy Do part wrong.

Hasbro did change the name because it was associated with being the retard pony, and people who identify as life's retard pony were the ones most upset when the company sent their kind back to the basement.

By way of background, the guy telling the story cares for a pony-loving special needs kid but is not a fan of word police types.

Also, why are you so worked up about the tone of the show? It was a good 80% positive. Check your estrogen.

Did we watch the same video?
The one with all the jokes at bronies expense?

    2. What the fuck are you talking about? There were like two jokes Kevin Smith made throughout the whole episode and the Horse Head guy just being uncomfortable for the first half. Overall, the video made me wanna chill out and go to BronyCon, and then stop by the Secret Stash.

    3. Hold on here. Remember that video from a recent con where one of the show staff said iTunes was the one that demanded the Derpy voice change / eye underp / name drop, for fears of offending the special needs community? It didn't get much press at the time (because Horse News wasn't around yet).

  5. The one where two of the guys are fans and the rest play along?

When did people get so sensitive?

  8. >(saying that the name "Derpy" preceded "Ditzy")

    How is that wrong?

I don't get Ditzyfags, when will you get that DITZY WAS NEVER DERPY BEFORE!
Faust said there was a pony mentionned BY NAME who was clumsy, she didn't had a design, Faust said that we could ASSOCIATE ditzy's name to Derpy because we gave her the same clumsy personnality, but that was just a possibility, Ditzy was NEVER her official name, and it'd be retarded if it was, both can be considered "insensitives" by SJW anyway.
