Tidbits: Molestia Returns (?) Brony Tale online, A new con in Nashville, BronyCon coverage, other stuff

It was a dark day when Molly went away, but today, we're happy to say that it looks like she's back to stay, without JJ. That's right an artist on tumblr, approximating the art style of tumblr's favorite suspected sexual predator is creating a brand new "Princess Molestia" comic. All that and more in today's tidbits.

You can find the new Molly right here http://askprncssmolestia.tumblr.com/ a testament to her massive ass loving fanbase. They've been running for a few weeks so we're interested to see what comes of it.

In other news, at long last "A Brony Tale" has been released on Amazon and iTunes. So expect piracy reviews shortly.

Catie has a new Friendship is Recapped out, to continue to make the Hiatus less painful. This week is BATS

We made the "Peed in the Ball Pit" term Urban-Dictionary official, thanks to PixelKitties, who also made a tshirt for the thing.
A new convention has been announced for March of 2015 in Nashville Tennessee. They're calling it the "Southern Skies Pony Jubilee" and that up top is the mascot "Opry Iris". They are in the process of crewing up right now so we'll be keeping an eye on it.

Horse-News was approved for Press Coverage of BronyCon in August, as long as we promise to be on our best behavior. Heh. We also have coverage set for Galacon happening simultaneously.

Some anons attended Fiesta Equestria this weekend.

They took pictures too.

A preview of an upcoming article: Meet CMAMLP. It's like MADD, except even dumber.

We received some more entries for the Swimsuit / Lingerie contest. The contest ends in a week so get your entries in.

Horse News doesn't typically pay attention or post much about merch unless there is something particularly interesting about it, or spoilery. Today one of our staffers made a rare trip to WalMart, and saw this stuff. He took pics. The tattoo machine has some different clipart of Twilight which is interesting.

There's some other news about a full-series marathon of ponies coming to the Hub, but that's really nothing special, when you can watch all of the episodes online at any time.

  1. Hah! Take THAT John Joseco! You fucking COWARD! Too much of a pussy to fight against Hasjew's C&D! Now no one knows of your fucking art anymore! You fucked up big time! You're now gone and you should STAY gone for fucking over your fans like this and not fighting the power! At least whoever's doing this Molestia comic has a lot more courage than YOU ever possibly could! You fucking PUSSY!

    1. John Jesco got a C&D for his Molestia tumblr horse-news even reported on it. He was made by law to stop creating the comic. He gets as much interest for his SFW gamer luna tumblr as he did with APM blog http://askgamingprincessluna.tumblr.com/
If you look around you can find the old APM comics, rather read them than a cheap imitation.

    2. That's no excuse. What Hasbro did was illegal and you know it. He could have easily fought this hands down. The law was wrong on this one. Parody, Fair Use, and Freedom of Speech is supposed to prevail over corporate special interests. John Joseco could have set the standard for content creators everywhere, but instead he chose to be a coward and a pussy and let Hasbro fuck him up the ass without any lube. Sorry Technicolor Dream, but you need to wake up from your own.

    3. But my fellow Anon, that is wrong. It's like saying someone is a coward for not fighting the 700ft fire breathing wrecking the town with just a stick. It's not cowardice, it's called being smart. I very much doubt John Joseco has the money to hire a team of lawyers to match Hasbro's for as long as they can. JJ realized this, didn't want to ruin his livelihood for the sake of a blog on the internet, apologized to his fans, and moved on.

      Delete
    4. All right. I cede that he didn't have the money to hire a lawyer let alone a team of lawyers to defeat Hasbro. Here's how he could have done that, while still avoiding ruining his livelihood. My own personal two word mantra: WORK HARDER.

      Delete
    5. Tell you what. Let's get Hasbro breathing down your neck and scrutinizing every finger you lift, then we'll see how your "Work Harder" mantra holds up as a multibillion dollar legal team gangs up to sodomize your asshole. Keep at it!

    6. Look, if JJ doesn't want to dance with Cashbro, he doesn't have to...but Cashbro has now been backed into a corner, because our new Big Molly is a parody of a parody...and even good lawyers can't fix that for the corporate master...

    7. After reviewing the responses on my comment, I realize that the lot of you are just going to continue to make lame excuse after lame excuse for why JJ doesn't even want to fight.

Because of responses like yours, we have become what I call a “yeah but,” society. It’s the 21st century’s answer to the old tired cliché of simply having lame excuses; we’ve now upped the ante to combine lame excuses with arguments that bear no relevance whatever at all to the situation at hand; as we debate and discuss the ongoing copyright and Fair Use and Parody law fiasco in America and meet people who “receive cease and desist orders,” every single one of them answer any sort of meaningful, logical point with the phrase “yeah but.”

What about the First Amendment? "Yeah, but a corporation nor the courts don't care about that."(Never mind the fact that this is provably untrue.) What about the Fair Use and Parody laws that are already in place? "The court will ignore it."(Another untrue excuse) What about when Aqua was sued at Mattel over Barbie Girl and Aqua actually WON that case against them? "Yeah, but they got lucky." Find a lawyer to handle this copyright situation. "Yeah, but I don't have the money, time or energy to fight that sort of thing.

The “yeah, buts,” never end; thus I’ve decided on a new tactic. The answer to every single solitary complaint and gripe about your lot in life is now summed up in my simple, two word mantra: WORK HARDER.

I’ve been accused of being mean, out of touch, unreasonable, pompous, arrogant, unrealistic, stubborn, thoughtless, callous and everything in between. Maybe, but I've gotten my content out. I've gotten my content out there, and I land auditions, among other things, because I WORK HARDER. And frankly, I expect the same level of intensity from John Joseco, or Elie Monty, or any other content creator or voice actor out there, if they're going to get into this field, and demand that they work harder than anyone else, just as I would expect of myself. If you don’t share the passion to achieve what it takes through hard work, that’s your prerogative, but don't be bitter about the situation, screw over your fans, and demand you be forgiven for it.

Those of you who insist on crying to those of us who find a way are now simply required to WORK HARDER. No more questions, no more pep talks, just two words; WORK HARDER.

To John Joseco. I think that you're a foolish, whiny, self-entitled idiot for creating such a horrible end to the AskPrincessMolestia comic/blog, and possessing a stinky-ass attitude for not even BOTHERING to try to address the C&D situation let alone address your fans about the situation or even thank them for supporting you, but I am told that’s an unhelpful, unrealistic attitude on my part; I am told that’s a mean, out-of-touch attitude on my part; I am told that’s a an easier-said-than done, unreasonable expectation on my part and it does nothing to help you now that allegedly, your other projects aren't doing so well, and you're trying to salvage your career to actually make your hobby into the job of your dreams. Fine then, John Joseco, and your supporters, I accept your challenge and admit that you are correct; there’s nothing we can do about the copyright situation now that you have agreed to stop the Princess Molestia blog; I accept your challenge and admit that it sucks to wake up every morning without a job, willing to do anything for a buck and constantly be turned away; I accept your challenge and admit that some people are too caught up in their daily lives to know or notice that the livelihood they work for is about to crumble and that it sucks to be blindsided. Here is how to overcome all of that: WORK HARDER.

    8. Jerry Rice, Will Smith, Al Michaels, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Jack Welch, Gordon Ramsay, Bill O’Reilly, Tim Russert, Oprah Winfrey, Jay Leno and even Madonna are all people who either are now or were once at the top of their perspective field for one reason; each of them worked harder than everyone else. In some cases, like Madonna, they weren’t even really that talented to begin with. In other cases, like Jerry Rice, they had the basic level of skills needed but not enough to stand out. In the case of Rice, he was never the fastest guy on the football field, the best catcher of the ball or the toughest guy and he always admitted it. He was, however, the hardest working man in the National Football League for nearly two decades and thus the greatest receiver to ever play the game; not on talent and skill but on hard work. Leno, Ramsay, Michaels and O’Reilly are all basically normal guys with no exceptional gifts who are known the world over for one thing; their uncompromising work ethic and non-stop dedication to winning, no matter how long the hours or how hard the work. Will Smith is my favorite actor but is also far from the best I’ve ever seen; he was the Fresh Prince for God’s sake! He knows it, too; "I've never really viewed myself as particularly talented. I've viewed myself as slightly above average in talent. And where I excel is ridiculous, sickening, work ethic. You know, while the other guy's sleeping? I'm working. While the other guy's eatin’? I'm working. While the other guy's making love, I mean, I'm making love, too. But I'm working really hard at it,"---Will Smith.

Working harder doesn’t have to be in the pursuit of being the best. We use icons and idols like those mentioned above as motivators and symbols of what can be achieved; perhaps ultimate success is not for you, so be it. It is, however, unarguable that hard work is what is required for survival in America, and if you are falling back behind your vision of what life should be like for you personally, then it is time for you to work harder.

Anyone who is a content creator knows that even with the Copyright Wars, these are not truly tough times; they are hard times relative only to just how great content creators have had it, even since the start of the Copyright Wars. That's the good news, incidentally. The bad news is that so many whining, lazy Americans think this is as bad as it gets. It isn’t and it’s going to get worse; which means the whining will get louder and the excuse making more obnoxious, and the responses that the previous two anons have made to my comments more obnoxious as well. Regardless of the calls of “how hard it is,” remember that one phrase will remain as a serum to combat all claims: WORK HARDER

“…the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.” – Thomas Paine

      Delete
    12. You people have the nerve to call ME an autist? The three of you are the ones acting like it just at the fact alone that I am expressing what I believe is going on in the situation; my opinion. The prevailing mantra in American discourse, exhibited by you two anons and Technicolor Dream, today is as follows: “You have every right to express your opinion…as long as your opinion matches mine.”

Or in other words the three of you are telling me: "Agree with me, or else."

      Delete
    13. Also, I did not realise until after posting that comment that I didn't actually call you a faggot in my original comment, even though I thought I did, and even though you are one. So just to clarify, this is the first anon that replied to you, not the second.

      Delete
    14. >No, I did not. I called you a faggot, and you are a faggot. That's all there is to this

That's exactly the problem here. None of your reactions are even necessary. I'll repeat what the three of you are telling me again. "You have every right to express your opinion.......as long as your opinion matches mine."

We have become not the afflicted, but rather, we have become the disease itself. Rather than using the brilliance left us by great people to engage in thunderous debate over what may be said, people like you, anon, simply shout down and try to shut down all forms of discourse YOU deem to be offensive, insensitive, impolite, untoward, inappropriate, or just plain mean. You hide behind buzzwords and PERSONAL ATTACKS rather than actually engaging in frank and logical rebukes of what’s being spoken, and you do everything you can to destroy people, rather than dissect, disprove, and discredit their words and their opinions.

This must stop. There is no alternative, no other choice, no new path that can be forged, unless and until we all agree that there is, in fact, a place for everyone, including those that some of us may deem to be immature, improper and even, incorrect.

Whether you deem it to be silly, immature or unnecessary, or in your case, autistic, is irrelevant. Argue the facts, your position, and why I am wrong. The person holding the point of view that you disagree with can’t be wrong because he’s "autistic". He must be wrong on the merits, so debate the merits. Let him speak, encourage him to express his wrong opinion, because the more it’s said, the more people will hear its’ fallacy and agree with YOU. That’s how debate and persuasion works.

      Silence persuades no one.

      Delete
    15. Aside from the fact that this is fucking Horse News, not exactly a place to go if you expect actual discourse, debating with you implies that I think we're on equal levels and that your opinion is valid. That's not how it works. If I engaged in serious discussion with every self-important dumbass pretending to be an intellectual, I'd have no time in the day to jack off. You might be more eloquent than the average fifteen-year-old on YouTube making ignorant political rants, but I am just as uninterested in arguing with or persuading you about anything. You're still a faggot, and you're not worth my time.

Now cry some more about how I'm silencing your opinion by not engaging with you in some asinine "debate".

      Delete
    16. You're already proving my point for me. You clearly cannot be reasoned with.

    17. Clearly so. Such a tragedy. Goodbye now, and don't let the door hit you on the way out.

    18. Oh man, this is some tumblrina level quasi-intellectual rant. JJ has a weak case because its not about copyrights, its about trademarks and protecting family-oriented brands. No sane judge would ever consider this as fair use, especially not this far away from what would be politically correct (it's a graphical blog about raping animals that are marketed to kids). If anything, the state would probably charge JJ with something instead, if he is in one of the more retarded states.

Also, have you considered that JJ just doesnt give a shit? You should consider that stance too, SJW-anon.

(For the record, I am not any of the previous anons)

      Delete
    19. Duly noted, anon.

      Delete
    20. Still, anon, it doesn't matter at all. This has nothing to do, anymore, with copyrights, has nothing to do with trademarks, it has EVERYTHING to do with freedom of speech and expression. If Hasjew and other corporations as well as the courts are gonna go out of their way to silence John Joseco because of the Molestia blog, then where is it gonna go next? Hasbro is gonna start targeting FIMFiction, and even Horse News itself because of the "trademark" copout, and then EVERYTHING is gonna wind up getting shut down due to legal action. Bear that in mind, anon, and remember that when it does eventually happen, remember that I TOLD YOU SO. Someone needs to tell Hasjew as well as the trademark and copyright courts that NOBODY HAS THE RIGHT TO BE OFFENDED. Especially NOT in America.

      Delete
    21. OP is a faggot

a bitter, whiny, entitled faggot projecting all of his faults onto JJ.

    22. I'm not saying you are wrong about fighting against wrongful C&D (also, cry wolf some more, theres only been about 5 of these yet), just that this is absolutely not the case to do it with. It's a fucking tumblr about >rape, in a universe created for kids. This becomes a good argument FOR the copyright and trademark laws. If anything, it will set legal presidence for siding with the corporations in other, less politically charged cases.

You've been snorting too much of the Pounding Father Constopation and 4chan culture to see clearly on this matter, SJW-anon.

      Delete
    23. >Implying that I'm an SJW

You do understand that in spite of my criticisms toward John Joseco that I'M ON HIS SIDE, right?

What I'm trying to get John Joseco to do, is grow a fucking pair. What is so peculiar or SJW about that? And for the record I am NOT an SJW. I'm not even a fucking tumblr user!

      Delete
    24. What's SJW about that is that you expect JJ to engage in fruitless, self-destructive behavior for the sake of your principles, that you act like a spoiled toddler because he didn't handle the C&D in a way that you personally approve of, and that you resent the fact that people live their lives grounded in reality and not according to your greater good.

You have the SJW mentality, just with a different set of political beliefs.

      Delete
    25. All right. Then I beg you a question: If someone from Hasbro decided to go after Horse News, or any other pony related website because of so-called "trademarks" when it's on the same cop out as what happened to the Molestia blog, what do you suggest we do? Just sit idly by and have that taken down? Or are you going to stand and fight?

"The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it."---Albert Einstein

      Delete
    26. Except they wouldn't and couldn't go after Horse News, SJW-anon. They could no more take down Horse News than they could take down the MLP page on Wikipedia. The hypothetical scenario you propose is retarded, and so are you. Also your random quoting is extremely pretentious. Also you smell.

      Delete
    27. You're seriously drinking from some bad coolaid, SJW-anon. Or you're taking me on a ruse cruise.

Aside from the IWTCIR in the logo, Horse News does not infringe upon any of Hasbro's assets or property and is also probably making them more money. There's also a much stronger fair use argument as well as the free speech argument, as they are "journalists" reporting on "news", even if its parody and shenanegans. Same reason The Onion isn't sued to kingdom cum.

To compare, not only did the Molestia blog take a recognizable character from the show that is trademarked from Hasbro, it also puts the character in a light that can potentially harm the brand and alienate the intended demographic. Thats bad for business, detrimental, which is a legal argument against fair use.

Don't for a minute think that there's not hundreds of Hasbro minions keeping a tab on the fandom at any given time to unlock our trends and potential good or bad activites. They will slam a C&D on anything that starts harming their money-cow and will let anything that makes them more money slide under the radar until it becomes a legal issue not to act. That's how they lost the rights to those older generation pony names.

The Hasbro guys are not all evil, they have to work within the same stupid laws as everyone else. Suddenly Disney snaps up the rights to Rainbow Dash and we're stuck with some red and black OC instead.

This isn't really that hard to understand, SJW-anon. You just have to stop thinking we're gonna recreate Equestria any time soon.

      Delete
    28. If I might throw my hat in the ring, I can kind of see where SJW-anon is coming from, but I agree he's a touch too.......overzealous about it, to say the least. I'm gonna play the devil's advocate and kind of defending his argument. To do that, I've borrowed an e mail from a source. Names have been redacted for privacy concerns.

To start out my argument, I use the basis from it by borrowing the words of a brilliant man by the name of Jim Sterling. I've tweaked and peaked things around to make the situation fit and make it relevant, and I hope you take it to consideration and give me your rebuttal which I will respectfully listen to.

To start things off, it's happening again; the Copyright Wars part deux is here. It's happening all over the internet again, hither and dither.

So, let's begin with the pony videos on Youtube. In recent years, whether doing it for the sake of art or otherwise, a lot of people like Animated James, among other people were making a nice living for themselves practicing their animation and even their voice acting skills off the back of the My Little Pony: FiM series. Usually recorded by themselves for some parody adventures of the show.

In the cases of Kayla-Na and fdakimakura, Hasbro was most definitely in the right and was perfectly sound and legit in their decision. HOWEVER, as with any emergent new independent business avenue, Hasbro's old guard; the dusty white men on their guilded thrones saw success and decided that they(Hasbro) were owed a slice of the pie.

More and more recently and culminating with Youtube's LAZY policy change, these videos have been CLAIMED by corporations like Hasbro. Hasbro, as all already know, have made copyright claims on ALL videos using ANY elements from Friendship is Magic. And some known brony Youtube channels have had hundreds of their videos, whether they've made a living off them or not, flagged and removed from circulation.

Some call it judgement day. Some even defend it, gleeful, that maligned brony artists, voice actors or personalities are out of work. But understand this, [NAME REDACTED]. It is, however, a slippery slope, and a troublesome situation--one that highlights the dire states of copyright and trademark law in the United States.

Whether you, or any other brony content creator want to realize this, the world has changed. Information has become a lot harder to control. Intellectual properties, such as they are, are growing more difficult to define in an era of social media, where content is constantly shared, often by Hasbro itself. One strikingly hypocritical element of the claiming situation, is that a small few of the allegedly "infringing" MLP videos are not using footage from the show ripped off from a DVD or anything, but trailer footage or B-rolls supplied by Hasbro itself, often to many outlets for posting on their own channels. In the case B-roll, they were especially encouraged to cut up and edit the footage for our own use. But in the era of scattershot copyright and intellectual property claims, it's ALL BEING FLAGGED. It's ALL BEING C&D'd, and IT'S ALL BULLSHIT. And it's why I cannot completely support your argument, especially where Princess Molestia is concerned.

      Delete
    29. Copyright, and intellectual property laws have always been FUCKING BULLSHIT, designed NOT to protect artists and content creators such as, John Joseco, and Animated James, but to give POWER to the parasitic corporations like Hasbro that have convinced the world that they are needed to act as butlers and gatekeepers between a creator and its audience.

Normally, where Princess Molestia is concerned, among other sexual parodies involving MLP, or even normal G-rated videos, you would be right. But here's the problem. Fifty years ago, when information was more tightly controlled and social media like Facebook and Twitter was the stuff of science-fiction, what you stated about copyright and trademark laws might have been a simple little system. Today, as corporations like Hasbro encourage us to share and post, and use, and watch, and play, the more that the law needs to be changed. And NOT IN THE WAY, that Hasbro would want, where Hasbro continues to EXERTING CONTROL, and sustain its increasingly irrelevant existence.

In an online world, content creators get to directly serve their audiences. And it is guys like Mindlessgonzo, whether it's him doing the Princess Molestia videos while being ENTERTAINING as he does it, or Animated James making a duel between My Little Pony and Sonic the Hedgehog characters who need protection. Youtube benefited from a new generation of creative people just as both it, and Hasbro benefited from them(how did Hasbro benefit from them? Exposure. Publicity. Free advertisement). And it would behoove Google, for once, to just get off of its FUCKING LAZY ASS, and provide some protection for them.

And though some people may be pleased with the reaping of content on Youtube, and the internet as a whole, don't be too thrilled. As always this is about Hasbro EXERTING CONTROL--DOMINANCE over the content that WE THE PEOPLE CONSUME. Youtube, once a wild west of opportunity, is shrinking and restricting as every medium before it has. The line between folk hero brony/horsefucker, and public relations spokesman, is getting as blurry if not moreso, than the old line between, say, game journalists and perfective marketing shill. For example, in a non-pony related note, channels like Pewdiepie have already been able to score exclusive Let's Plays of certain video games. In relation, with that in mind, it will be very interesting to see what brony youtube channels are ALLOWED to post pony fan tributes, and the clandestine agreements to GET those allowances will be a source of fascination and suspicion.

Recently, youtubers, among other people, have earned a great deal of respect, as a source of providing REAL content from REAL people. Something organic, honest, and trustworthy. A respite from the allegedly questionable state the Friendship is Magic series is in now. In a world where channels among other places need approval and permission before posting content....well...that might not be so true anymore. Things are going to get all sorts of murky, and any attempts to clear it up are going to lead to something a little bit worse.

      Delete
    30. I suppose one offshoot of this, is that independent video game companies, and independent artists who understand the VALUE OF COMMUNITY, unlike Hasbro, are going to benefit immensely from this. If the big famous pony artists like Dusty Katts' or Elie Montys', or Mandoponys', or Animated James' or Mindlessgonzo's out there are not allowed to touch Hasbro shows and those kinds of shows, and we're gonna get more shows like Shut Up Cartoons, and other legitimate viral sensations; we are gonna get COOL tv shows from COOL producers who are COOL ABOUT SHIT, actually getting out there and getting the attention they they deserve, thanks to their talent. Which is very good. Because ultimately, the truly best Youtube personalities need only their personalities to succeed. So [NAME REDACTED], I wish you nothing but the best of luck to you and the other voice actors and content creators. Because at the end of the day, WE DON'T NEED YOU, HASBRO. For ANYTHING. And that's what TRULY upsets Hasbro's legal team and CEO Brian Goldner, isn't it? We don't NEED them--We don't NEED Hasbro. Look at you and John Joseco, or even Jim Sterling. You NEVER NEEDED ANY corporation to do ANY of what you did. I mean, sure you do stuff on youtube, and I can't speak for you. But if I were in your shoes, if I got blacklisted from Youtube by Hasbro, the worst they could to do me is annoy me for a minute. Because I AM NOT AFRAID OF HASBRO. And that's what makes people like Brian Goldner and his legal team afraid. Because the new generation of content creators is NOT AFRAID of Hasbro and others like Hasbro. So to Hasbro, I say FUCK OFF. Thank god, for Jim Sterling.

    1. It's the same attraction that causes crash-queues on highways. They might just get crazy enough to show us their dicks or something.

    2. Well the one guy put up a pic of another one of 'em sucking his own...

Oh wait, the third guy took that down upon discovering it a few hours later.

    4. If new Molly is down permanently, we can definitely look at HN as the culprit. They are the 2nd most viewed brony news site on the internet. if they report that something someone is trying to keep under the radar, the people they are keeping quiet from are almost 100% sure to see it.

    5. Maybe Tumblr just isn't an appropriate venue for Molly.

    6. Wait a minute, how can HN be the culprit? Your explanation isn't really jiving with me, Nightmarity Knight.

    7. We have already seen that both hasbro and pinkiepony both visit HN regularly. HN just advertized that an obscure person is trying to bring back something that one or the other of them shut down. too much publicity, can be disasterous for such a site.
