"They are more important than you"- Bobby Curnow on art and writers

Recently, Bobby "What Editing?" Curnow posted his thoughts on the creative process on his official Twitter account. People have wondered about the inner workings at IDW for a long time and these two tweets reveal quite a bit about their processes.
Curnow, who as the comic editor of a major publishing company openly called writers merely a tool for artists, holds a very strange view of writers who actually want to work for an all-ages comic. Rather than the writer providing direction for an artist, a writer is seen as less important than an artist, which usually treats their writer as an equal partner. In a pitch, the most important part to Curnow is the art, which of course is consistently good in IDW's best selling Friendship is Magic comics:

Quality

This recent development is bizarre because in the past, Curnow has previously bemoaned the lack of writers who want to work on the best-selling, but shockingly unpopular with creatives series.
We at Horse News can only wonder why a man who makes his career working in an industry of creatives would so flippantly disregard the work of so many, strangely including even himself. All this single writer can say is that it's no wonder new blood is so hard to come by in the comics. But who needs improvement when you've got sales?

  1. I don't disagree actually, I do believe that story is important but I have always thought that comics are a visual medium first and foremost. Although they could use some new writers, the first issue of that killer apples comic is fucking junk.

    1. I second this. Comics are indeed a visual medium first and foremost (though writing isn't UNimportant). And it's precisely BECAUSE comics are a visual medium first that I can't stand any of Fosgitt's issues. His style is just not suited for pony at all, and I have no idea why they keep using him.

    2. I posit that a good comic book should support both text and pictures. If one was weaker, why not just read a book of nothing BUT pictures, or maybe just read a book
nigga

raise yo' fuckin' kids, nigga
(well aware that
tag doesn't work in this format.)

  2. Bobby Curnow is incompetent and shouldn't be editor of any comic book company anywhere.

  3. I don't disagree that it's very important for a writer to partner with a good artist, but saying "eye candy is more important that the actual story" doesn't seem to be sane.

Then again, it worked for Final Fantasy, so maybe he's on to something.

    1. >I don't disagree

So when you say that, you DO actually agree. Because to say "you don't disagree," you're using a double-negative.

    2. I don't see your point... He agrees "that it's very important for a writer to partner with a good artist, but" and the but stays here.

  4. As an artist with a little bit of an ego, even I have to say "WTF you talking about?" Some of the shittiest comics I've ever read were well drawn, and I gave up on them after a certain point. And some of my favorite comics have terrible art. Seems like a good writer and artist should complement each other.

  5. This explains everything regarding why the IDW comics have taken a dive off of a cliff in terms of storytelling since they first debuted.

And also why he seemingly doesn't give two shits about how amazingly retarded some of the writers are. Yes, of course I mean Anderson and Whitley.

    1. The one thing I will say about Whitley is that at least he seems to be more competent at writing stories than Anderson is >.>. Some of his politics and opinions make me roll my eyes but they usually seem to be less frequent and intrusive in the comics imo.

    2. I actually think that Whitley is more intrusive than Anderson is when it comes to putting his shitty opinions in a story. Anderson hasn't ever centered an issue around his stupid diatribes on racism like Whitley did. Anderson is perfectly content to actually write stories rather than soapbox rants. On the other hand, Whitley only ever did that once, and every other time he's written, he's been pretty decent, with his Discord issues being amongst my personal favourites in the IDW series, whereas everything Anderson produces is garbage regardless of its content.

So yeah, I kind of agree with your sentiments.

  6. You can have the best damn art you have ever seen in a comic, but if the writing is shit you can very well expect no one is going to bother picking it up after awhile. People are far more willing to swallow mundane art if the writing peeks their interest. Ideally, the art and writing should compliment one another.

  8. Wow. I can't believe he actually said that. Was Bobby around in the industry during the 90's?

Was he aware that shit like that led Image to form with it's many delayed books and shitty-yet-somehow-inexplicably-popular art and books such as Liefeld's Youngblood, where Perelman's Marvel nearly led to the death of the whole industry because importance was laid less on the story but with "cutting edge" art for meandering plots?

Wouldn't be surprised if he pissed of what talent he barely has on the book off with this.

*Sigh* You know, I pretty much stopped buying the main book on that Everfree Deer-Elves story, and Friends Forever shortly after. Fosgitt I feel sorry for, for even if you can over look his art (with the odd hatred of his tendency for bipedal ponies), he's ususally paired with Tedly.

Honestly, the last MLP books I bought were those Fiendship Forever oneshots. Tirek's was nice, Sombra's was cliche yet overall okay I suppose. I absolutely hated the Sirens, Nightmare Moon & Chrysalis stories. The former was especially bad, so much so that I think Tedly was trying his hardest to troll anyone who liked Rainbow Rocks or EqG in general. Hell, MLP in general for sure.

    1. I didn't think Chrysalis's Fiendship was all that bad. Below Tirek and Sombra, certainly, and Twi being an idiot is a constant annoyance in Cook's writing, but I liked it otherwise.

      Fuck the Sirens comic, though.

    2. I just friggin' hated the supposed origin that Cook gave Chrysalis & the Changelings. End result of Starswirl dumping his old potions in an enchanted swamp? Chrysalis has cheese legs because of a misadventure (never mind that all changelings have those IIRC). Ugh.

Hate to say it, but Cook was a big reason I eventually stopped buying the comics. I could forgive Reflections, even if I hated the way they screwed up the "Mirror-Verse" by turning Alt-Celestia & Alt-Luna unequivicably good at the end and the fact she seemed smug in rubbing readers' noses in the fact that an Alt-Mane Six weren't in at all despite being on the fucking cover. But those Bull & Elf Deer stories were particularly bad. At least the show excused Celestia being nerfed by the Smooze being evil and her hoping Discord would take things to "Interesting" and not "Sending someone to a Sock Puppet Dimension".

But yeah, fuck that Sirens comic. And fuck that Moon Kingdom-who-watches-dreams-noones-ever-heard-of bullshit too.

    3. Honestly, I don't get what was wrong the changeling backstory. It makes about as much sense as any other backstory they could've gotten. It's not like there's any canon precedent being contradicted. There's no Equestrian creation myth or anything. If you just don't like it for personal reasons, that's fine, and I don't blame you, but is it fair to hold it against Cook for choosing a backstory that you didn't like? What if she'd gone with corrupted flutterponies? Or love-poisoned alicorn? Or created by an evil god? Or natural evolution? Like, honestly, tell me, anon 3. What did you think the changelings backstory was before? Serious question. I want to know.

Oh, and yeah, fuck the elves too.

    4. Same anon as 00:22.

"What if she'd gone with corrupted flutterponies? Or love-poisoned alicorn? Or created by an evil god? Or natural evolution?"

Any of those would literally have been much better. I just hated how, once again, it was related to Starswirl and him fucking up. It's becoming an incredibly lazy trope in both the comics and fanfics since Magical Mystery Cure, or hell, since he was first mentioned in Luna Eclipsed(?).

But beyond that, the comic had to overexplain everything about the changelings. Where did they come from? Starswirl pouring potions in a magical swamp. Where did Chrysalis get her crown and tattered wings & cheese legs? Previous excursions in conquering shit, the latter of which was apparently adopted by all the regular Changelings apparently since I don't think they were created with them.

Hell, the idea that Chrysalis was either the Alicorn Princess who was love poisoned long ago, or is Prisma from that Cadance book might not be original, but they're still more satisfactory than Cook's origins. And pre-emptive "I know the comics aren't canon to the show", it was still a dumb origin.

  9. If you're going to put art before PLOT AND DIALOGUE, maybe you should be able to draw characters that look right and not like weird boneless Tweetie Bird children.
